GETTING STARTED IN FITNESS

To help every member feel confident and supported, we have age-based fitness guidelines for youth and teens.

When you set up your membership, please stop by any Greater Austin YMCA location so we can help set up your account and take a photo for everyone included on the membership. Photos are required for check-in.

Each time you visit, simply scan your membership card at the front desk. Children under 12 must check in with a parent or guardian. Children and teens should also wear their orange or black wristbands to show they have completed the appropriate fitness orientation.

To help every member feel confident and supported, we have age-based fitness guidelines for youth and teens. Orientations are required for anyone under 16 to access the fitness floor.

Get introduced to cardio equipment designed for kids and families in a fun, supportive setting. You’ll learn how to use machines safely, understand built-in safety features and practice fitness floor etiquette so everyone can enjoy a positive and comfortable shared experience. Family orientation sessions are 30 minutes.

Children ages 8 to 11 who have completed the Family Fitness Orientation will receive an orange wristband, which is required to access the fitness floor. A parent or guardian must remain within arm’s reach at all times, and youth under age 12 may use cardio equipment only. Strength machines are not permitted.

Join us for a fun and supportive introduction to our cardio and strength equipment designed just for teens. We’ll cover safe machine use, fitness floor etiquette and a simple starter workout to help build confidence and make every Y visit a success. Fitness orientation sessions are 30 minutes.

A black wristband indicating the completion of the Teen Fitness Orientation is required for anyone aged 12-15 to be on the fitness floor.

Get started with a welcoming guided introduction to our cardio and strength equipment for older teens and adults. We’ll cover safe and proper machine use, fitness floor etiquette and a simple starter workout so you feel confident, comfortable and ready to make the most of every Y visit. Fitness orientation sessions are 60 minutes.

No wristband is required for anyone aged 16+ to be on the fitness floor, but this orientation is recommended.
