Swim Policies Updated 2023
Water safety is a top priority for Greater Austin YMCA, and with guidance from YMCA of the USA, we’re strengthening our swim policies to support recent updates made to Texas pool codes.
These updates include a new swim test and color band system effective Saturday, June 3, at all Greater Austin YMCA locations.
What updates are being made?
- All swimmers age 13 and younger must have a parent/guardian (ages 18+) in the pool area actively supervising all activities.
- Swimmers age 13 and younger will need to pass the new swim test in order to be in the water without a parent/guardian at arm’s reach.
- Our new swim test consists of:
- Underwater swim
- 25-yard freestyle swim
- 30-second water tread
What are the color levels and what do they mean? There are three color levels – Green, Yellow, and Red.Green: Can swim anywhere in the pool. Yellow: Only shallow water swimming permitted. Red: Swimmer must be supervised with personal flotation device.
What if my child is already swim tested?
All swimmers who have passed swim tests since January 1, 2023 will be automatically permitted to use a YELLOW band. Yellow band swimmers who wish to upgrade to the GREEN band will have to retest beginning Saturday, June 3.
We truly appreciate your understanding and cooperation. If you have any questions or concerns, please connect with the Aquatics department or the Welcome Desk at any of our Centers.Thank you!
