Inclement Weather Policy

Inclement Weather Policy

At the Greater Austin YMCA, your safety is our top priority. We monitor the weather closely to make wise decisions about facilities and programs. Our protocols follow guidelines from the EPA, OSHA, National Weather Service (NWS), and NOAA, helping us address risks like poor air quality, extreme heat, and lightning.

Our policies help keep everyone safer, especially youth, seniors and those with health needs. By adopting a unified policy across all Greater Austin YMCA locations, members who enjoy spending time at multiple locations will have a consistent experience.

This policy covers all indoor/outdoor activities at our locations, including pools, camps, sports and common areas. We’ll share updates via staff, emails, website or alerts.

Central Texas weather can shift fast, creating hazards like breathing issues, heat illness or lightning strikes. Our updated approach ensures consistent, proactive responses to minimize risks and disruptions.

We use proven triggers for changes:

  • Air Quality Index (AQI): Pauses outdoor activities at 151+ (unhealthy per EPA). Indoor activities continue unless ventilation is affected. Resumes below 151.
  • Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT): Modifies or pauses outdoor activities above 93°F (per OSHA/NWS). Adds hydration, breaks, and shade. Indoors are usually unaffected.
  • Lightning: Outdoor areas are closed within a 10-mile radius, and indoor pools are closed within 3 miles (per NOAA). They reopen 30 minutes after the last thunder or lightning.

We always prioritize caution; severe storms may lead to full closures under our emergency plans.

This page provides current weather data and status for each location, helping you plan your visit. You can also contact your local center directly.

Thanks for your flexibility—we’re committed to a safe Y for all.
