Afterschool Care

Youth (Ages 6-12)
Child Care
Pre-K - 5th Grade (some schools with additional grades)

Per the announcement from Austin ISD on 3/12, campuses will be closed to Afterschool providers, including the Y, from Monday, March 23rd through Friday, April 3rd. This decision affects all Austin ISD campuses on which the Extend-A-Care YMCA provides Afterschool services. Please allow Y staff some time to determine next steps in light of AISD’s recent decision. More information will be posted here and will be sent to parents via email.

Building a strong foundation. The YMCA of Austin offers afterschool care for children in grades K - 5 at more than 90 licensed sites in five Austin-area school districts (PK-4 offered at select locations) serving more than 4,000. The Afterschool Care Program provides on-site care for your child, beginning when school is dismissed and continuing until 6:30 p.m, at most locations (6pm at some locations).

Y Afterschool provides opportunities for physical, social-emotional and cognitive learning experiences. Participants gain a sense of achievement, build relationships and find their sense of belonging. For parents, Y Afterschool offers peace of mind from knowing their child is in a safe and enriching place.

Have you heard the good news? The YMCA of Austin and Extend-A-Care for Kids have merged to make a new childcare branch: Extend-A-Care YMCA! We are so excited to come together in order to serve more families across Austin, Manor, Del Valle, and Hays with more enriching programming and affordable childcare.  Watch this video to learn more or read our press release.

For the 2020 Spring school semester, YMCA and EAC families will register, submit payments, and use their normal afterschool care as they have in the past. Please see below to find out more information and how to register.

Changes to registration, fees, and more will apply for the Fall 2020-2021 school year. More information to come in April 2020!

Financial Assistance Policy: YMCA of Austin programs and activities are designed to benefit persons of all backgrounds, and fees are based on the cost of providing each program. While participants are expected to pay their fair share, when financial assistance (FA) dollars are available, the YMCA will assist any individual or family that wants to participate in the afterschool care program but cannot afford the fee.

If you are requesting to pay the FA rate at Blackshear, IDEA Montopolis (formerly Allan), IDEA Rundberg, IDEA PArmer Park, or Ridgetop Afterschool programs, you do NOT need to complete the FA packet.

Financial Assistance applicants are required to complete the packet below.

Financial Assistance Application 2019-20

Aplicación para Asistencia Económica 2019-20

Only completed packets (including proof of income) will be accepted and processed. The YMCA strongly encourages parents to apply early for financial assistance as funds are limited.

The YMCA of Austin is proud to partner with Workforce Solutions to provide care to families. We accept CCS at all afterschool sites.

If you have already received approval through Workforce and are interested in registering for our Afterschool Program, please complete registration forms for the school year and return them to our office. Be sure to check the box in the upper right hand corner of the first page indicating “Workforce/CCS”. Then, contact your caseworker to let her know you are registering for care through the YMCA at your child’s school. Your caseworker will send an approval letter, and at that time we can process your child’s registration.

Please note, all registrations are based on availability. If your desired site has reached capacity, we will place your child on a waitlist and no approval is needed until we can offer care.

Our enriching curriculum incorporates the Y’s 5 core values (Caring, Faith, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility) and the Search Institute’s 40 Development Assets Framework and TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills). Weekly themes interwoven through the consistent daily activities of arts and crafts, science & math, nutrition & wellness, character developments/assets and literacy make each week fun and engaging.

In addition, the Y delivers CATCH physical activity lessons daily and has made a commitment to meet the Y’s Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Standards (HEPA).

Every First Thursday of the month we invite parents to join us for fun themed activities with the kids! Parents, kids and staff enjoy games and craft activities. Past First Thursdays have included carnivals, May the 4th (Star Wars), holiday ornaments and cookie decorating and Fall pumpkin fest.

Afterschool sites also participate annually in activities for No Place For Hate (anti-bias and diversity education), as well as the Y’s Annual Giving Campaign.

Here’s examples of the curriculum designed for our Afterschool programs:

January 2020 Curriculum

February 2020 Curriculum

Many area schools already partner to deliver CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) physical activity lessons and now, so does the Y. In both Afterschool and Summer Camp, Y staff are now teaching CATCH Kids club games and activities daily. This curriculum has 25 years of university-led research and has been shown to have statistically significant and positive impacts on child health behaviors including: increase in moderate to vigorous physical activity levels, improvement in self-reported food choice habits, positive family impact, and reduction in childhood obesity levels and risk factors.

Ask your children how they are enjoying active, team building, non-elimination games and activities at the Y.

As per Texas Department of Family and Protective Services licensing requirements, the YMCA of Austin certifies that all bulletins and notices issued by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission regarding unsafe products have been reviewed.

As per Texas Department of Family and Protective Services licensing requirements, the YMCA of Austin is required to inform parents that YMCA Afterschool Care programs operate within Gang-Free zones. A gang free zone is a designated area around a specific location where prohibited gang related activity is subject to increased penalty under Texas law. Zones are withing 1000 feet of all afterschool centers.

Afterschool Parent Testimonials

After school care is a blessing. They serve snacks and dinner. Children get homework help. There is a schedule for arts and crafts and other projects. The children get to play outside too.

Presidential Meadows Parent

The kids have a wonderful time at YMCA. They have time for kids to do their homework, play active games in the gym, and provide snacks. The staff is nice and great with kids. My kids don’t want to leave when I pick them up. The best part is that it is right at the kids school so they don’t have to take a bus. I highly recommend YMCA afterschool care.

Jollyville Elementary Parent

I like the attention that the staff give to our children.

Baranoff Elementary Parent

First of all I appreciate all the help I get from this after school program: helping the kids with homework, very engaging educational activities. My son loves going to YMCA after school, and to see and know that he loves going back makes me happy. Thank you for providing us some parents like myself that need financial support in order to me to make ends meet. Thank you and God bless you all that make all this possible.

Blake Manor Elementary Parent

My son loves the activities and time spent with friends!

Ridgetop Elementary Parent

The kids are not begging to not go. They love the counselors and enjoy the activities and help with homework provided by the Y. One of mine most of the time tells me I came too early. It is a safe and positive environment.

Lagos Elementary Parent

I like the outside time and the daily organized craft projects.

UT Elementary Parent

Y’all are very understanding and the prices are good, especially for a single parent with one income. Thank y’all. My daughter enjoys the after school program and that you can’t ever say thank you enough.

Negley Elementary Parent

Hard working counselors that connect with the kids – always friendly, courteous and respectful.

Laurel Mountain Parent

My son loves YMCA! He never wants me to pick him up early. He comes home with all kinds of crafts every day and says everyone is nice to him. As a parent what more could you want :)

UT Elementary Parent

Your counselors are warm and very caring of our children, your programs are clear and executed in a very safe manner, and my child was consistently very happy in the program. He was devastated to have to leave!

Canyon Creek Parent

Program is convenient and affordable. Staff help kids get homework done and provide structured activities. Kids are respected, while also holding them accountable for their actions. Great program!

Presidential Meadows Parent
