From 6 to 36 months, come swim with your little one and watch them enjoy the aquatic environment! There are three separate classes based on the skill and comfort level of your child:
Shrimp (Ages 6-17 months): For our littlest swimmers, Shrimp is designed to introduce babies and parents to the aquatic environment.
Kipper (Ages 18-29 months): Designed for children that are ready to learn basic swimming skills with parent accompaniment.
Perch (Ages 30-36 months): A new spin on Parent Child Classes! You and your child will participate together, but a little more time will be spent in a skill structure environment.
YMCA swim leagues are structured supervised workout/swim team practices with optional swim meets. Swim leagues are available from children ages 6 to 17, depending on your branch. The swimmers will learn stroke technique, and endurance and interval training. This is done through the use of various drills and coach-designed workouts. These workouts are tailored to the level of the swimmers in the program and are designed to help them meet their individual goals while still taking part in a team activity. Cetain swimming experience required by each branch, see specific leagues for more information.
Launching in January! Y-USA has upgraded our swim lesson program. This upgrade was developed by a group of aquatic experts and YMCA associations, then it was field tested at YMCA’s across the country.
The result a thoughtful, tested curriculum with skill progressions appropriate for participants of all abilities.
The swim lessons curriculum is geared towards what we know about how children and adults learn and develop.
For the student, the emphasis is on skill progression, and water safety. Parents will now have a peace of mind that their children will learn self-rescue skills first, then, how to swim.
As students advance, focus turns to increasing stroke coordination, comfort, and endurance. Once the students have built strength and endurance, students master familiar strokes, such as elementary backstroke, front crawl, backstroke breaststroke and butterfly. We’re excited to share this upgraded program! Registration is now open for January & February. Free swim lesson level evaluations are available.
**Swim Lesson Upgrade will launch at all branches by Fall 2017
