Teachers/Schools in Youth & Government
To help teenagers become responsible citizens and future leaders of our nation.
To create an environment in which students can increase their political awareness and understanding, while learning the meaning of social action through an actual hands-on experience in government.
The Youth and Government program functions under the umbrella of local YMCA’s. Due to this structure, local teachers receive YMCA representatives as additional club coaches and helpers when they choose to start a YMCA Youth and Government Club.
Clubs meet weekly at the leisure of the club advisor and club president, usually deciding on a day that suits the full team. All clubs are encouraged to have a minimum of 10 students to begin while also focusing on one section during their first year. Sections are usually selected by advisor preference or school interest.
Advisors are supplied with full club manuals for all sections and will receive a training on all competition sections prior to the start of the fall school year. Manuals include clubs guidelines, ideas for activities during clubs meeting and opportunities for fundraising.
Teachers will also receive a full handout aligning our program structure with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills domains.
