Reducing Senior Isolation During the Holidays

helping hands

The holidays are a special time to be together with loved ones. They can also be a difficult time for people whose families are far away, or who have passed on. This holiday season, remember to check in on friends and neighbors who may feel isolated.

It can feel intimidating at first, but all it takes is a simple gesture to make someone feel included and loved during the holidays. Here are a few ways to reach out:

  • Are you hosting a dinner? Extend an invitation to your aging friends who may be alone.
  • Holiday parties are plentiful this time of year. Invite your friend along, and offer to provide a ride.
  • Something as simple as a phone call wishing them a merry Christmas can go a long way to create connection.
  • The best gift you can give someone is your time and attention.

The month of December can get hectic and busy, and it can be easy to forget that not everyone has a family that is close by. When you welcome lonely friends into your traditions and celebrations, the warmth and connection is powerful. Is there a potentially isolated person you're thinking of right now? Why not give them a call, and invite them to join some of your festivities this year!
