Lights On Afterschool Highlights
On October 25th, Y Afterschool Programs, along with Afterschool programs from across the country, celebrated Lights On Afterschool to illuminate the importance of and need for afterschool programs. The YMCA of Austin's 27 afterschool programs participate every year, inviting parents to spend time with their children to observe how we help their kids to learn, grow, and thrive.
The Afterschool Alliance launched Lights On Afterschool in 2000, and it's the only nationwide event that celebrates the impact that afterschool programs make on children, families, and communities. More than 8,300 events were held across the country and attracted 1 million Americans According to the Afterschool Alliance, 9 in 10 Americans, across multiple demographics, agree that afterschool programs are essential to their communities for the services they provide to children and families.
In the United States, there are 11.3 million unsupervised children who have nowhere to go after school. Programs like Y afterschool help keep kids supported through homework help, STEM activities, physical activity, healthy snacks, meal programs, hands-on learning, and providing a sense of belonging. Afterschool programs provide a safe space for kids to go when school is out where they can learn and develop key skills like socialization, relationship building, teamwork, conflict resolution, philanthropy, and more. Our afterschool youth development leaders serve as mentors that kids can look up to and learn from.
At Lights on Afterschool, families got to mingle, play fun games, dance, create festive Lights On banners, have glow-in-the-dark dance parties, and create crafts together.
