MEND Program Overview:
MEND the program helps families lead happier and healthier lives through healthy eating, fun, physical activity, and small lifestyle changes. The MEND program runs for 10 weeks and meets twice a week for two hours. Families with kids ages 7–13 who are above a healthy weight are eligible to participate.

The YMCA of Austin is offering a FREE childhood obesity intervention program, MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do It!). MEND helps families lead a healthier and active lives through food education, increased
physical activity and sustainable lifestyle changes. The MEND program runs for 10 weeks and meets twice weekly for two hours.
Families, with kids ages 7-13 who are overweight, are eligible to participate.
Does MEND work? – Evidence of Success
The goal of MEND is to contribute toward reducing the prevalence of childhood obesity and preventing more children from becoming overweight or obese, particularly in low-income communities. During the past 10 years, MEND has become one of the most successful and internationally-recognized evidence-based overweight and obesity prevention and weight management programs, with programs currently running in the UK, US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Denmark. In the US, programs are currently available to underserved communities in Texas, California, Chicago, Colorado, Missouri, North Carolina and Washington DC. In Texas, programs operate in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Taylor, and Waco.
Approximately 80% of participants in MEND Programs maintain or reduce BMI and/or waist circumference. They also reduce their sedentary behavior and screen time and increase their nutrition knowledge, physical activity and self-esteem. Evidence suggests that these changes are maintained 12-months post-intervention.

The St. David’s Foundation has supported the growth of the MEND program since its inception. With Austin as the first YMCA in the country to offer the program, MEND is now poised to rollout to YMCAs nationwide.
