healthy living

As the year winds down, so do donations of blood across the Austin area in spite of ongoing critical needs. But this year, the YMCA of Austin is teaming with We Are Blood in a new ‘Y Are Blood’ competition to provide a much-needed boost to donations.

Through a series of visits by the We Are Blood mobile donation center (aka “The Bloodmobile”) to six YMCA of Austin locations, donors will compete to see which community is the most generous. And to incentivize giving, the Y will offer a 50% discount off its programs for anyone who donates. The donation drive schedule is as follows:

  • Southwest YMCA: 6219 Oakclaire Dr., Wednesday, December 22, 12pm – 6:00 pm - Register
  • Hays Communities YMCA: 465 Buda Sportsplex Dr., Thursday, December 23, 8am-2pm - Register
  • Springs Family YMCA: 27216 Ranch Road 12 South, Dripping Springs, Thursday, December 23, 12pm-6pm - Register
  • North Austin YMCA: 1000 W. Rundberg Ln., Tuesday, December 28, 8am-noon - Register
  • East Communities YMCA: 5315 Ed Bluestein Blvd., Thursday, December 30, 8am-noon - Register
  • Northwest Family YMCA: 5807 McNeil Dr., Thursday, December 30, 8am-noon - Register

“The Y is all about improving the health of our community,” said Sean Doles, YMCA of Austin Vice President of Mission Advancement, “and nothing is more fundamental to our health than the blood that runs through our vens. We invite Y members and anyone in the community to step up and provide a life-saving gift to someone right here in Central Texas.”

All donors will receive a voucher good for a 50% discount off popular YMCA of Austin programs such as martial arts, sports leagues, swim lessons and more. Some restrictions apply. For a full list of blood donation opportunities, visit https://weareblood.org/donor/.
