Benefits & Safety Considerations When Exercising

Did any of your new year’s resolutions include a commitment to regularly exercise? If it did, you’re not alone. Many people view the new year as an opportunity to reset habits and establish goals for the upcoming months. But the changing recommendations for safety during the pandemic may have you wondering whether exercising at the gym is right for you.

The Austin American Statesman recently chatted with us about weighing the benefits of exercising with COVID-19 safety in mind. The Y offers many options to members who value exercising at a facility or with others in a group setting. With chlorinated pools, outdoor classes and boot camps available in addition to traditional indoor classes and machines, YMCA members enjoy a variety of fitness options to keep resolutions and turn them into lifelong healthy habits.

Here’s What’s Happening This Month at the Y

Black History Month

February is Black History Month, a time to focus our attention on the contributions Black people have made in the United States throughout history.

The Austin area is rich with Black-owned services and products. Read the blog for a list, and support Black-owned businesses this Black History Month, and all year long.

The RESET Challenge begins February 7. This FREE challenge supports you in your fitness resolutions and encourages you to build healthy habits. Text RESET to 844-889-6222 and join a community moving forward to reach your goals. PLUS, each week you’ll have an opportunity to win prizes like an activity tracker smart watch, workout wireless headphones and gift cards for athletic gear.

Exclusive Benefit for Y Members: Athlete Foundry platform charts course to college athletics

If your middle- or high school athlete is looking for a path to college and beyond, consider the Athlete Foundry platform, which is free for YMCA of Austin members (A $200 value). Athlete Foundry helps students plot a course to becoming a collegiate athlete, offers pointers to secure college financial assistance and helps prepare students for life beyond sports.

Babysitting Certification

Saturday, February 12 we’re holding a 6-hour babysitting certification course. Your rising babysitter will learn not only the basic business aspects of babysitting, but also safety training, proper supervision, caregiving skills and how to respond to an ill or injured child. While CPR and AED knowledge is included in the course, it is not a CPR/AED certification. Register here.
