Welcoming Week at the YMCA of Austin

YMCA of Austin Partners with Refugee Services of Central Texas to recruit ‘Welcome Team’ Volunteers During Welcoming Week

One hundred volunteers needed to help refugees settle into their new hometown

All Austin Ys open to community Sept. 16-18 for Welcoming Weekend

[Austin, Texas]—This Welcoming Week (September 9-18), the YMCA of Austin is partnering with Refugee Services of Texas to recruit more than 100 volunteers by year end to serve on “Welcome Teams” and help refugees settle in our community.

During Welcoming Week, the YMCA joins Welcoming America and organizations nationwide celebrate immigrants’ contributions to communities and bring together all residents in a spirit of unity. “Welcome Teams” provide refugee families with a supportive network as they adjust to their new life in Texas.

Welcome Teams are paired with an arriving refugee family prior to their arrival in the U.S., and assist with everything from apartment set-up all the way to enrolling children in school. Those interested in volunteering can learn more and register at https://www.rstx.org/make-an-impact/volunteer.html.

In addition, during Welcoming Weekend, September 16-18, all YMCA of Austin locations are open to the community. Visitors can enjoy free use of the Y’s fitness centers, exercise classes, indoor and outdoor pools, gymnasiums, Child Watch and more.

Each year, Welcoming Week brings together immigrants and U.S.-born residents to promote cross-cultural understanding and raise awareness of the benefits of welcoming everyone. This is the fourth year the Austin Y has celebrated Welcoming Week with the community and its second year teaming with Refugee Services of Texas to offer support.

“From Afghanistan to Ukraine, we know people across the world face hardships and come to the United States to seek freedom and opportunity,” said Kathy Kuras, President and CEO at the YMCA of Austin. “At the Y, we seek to build bridges and provide avenues for people to take actions that improve themselves and their communities. Welcoming Week is an opportunity to connect, find common ground and celebrate our shared values and contributions.”
