Upcoming Holidays Across the Globe

Community

When does the holiday season begin? Many people consider Fall to be a time when holidays begin to ramp up in our communities. The changing weather, the leaves, and the radio tunes. All are indicators that the holiday season is upon us! But what are other people celebrating across the world during this time? Here are just a few of those holidays!

Halloween (October 31st)

It’s no wonder that this is the first upcoming holiday. Halloween is not just a US tradition. It has origins in Europe and has taken many different forms since. Looking for a family-friendly Halloween opportunity? Check out the list of YMCA events by clicking here.

The holiday is inspired by Mesoamerican rituals, European religion, and Spanish culture. Read more about the history here.

Diwali (November 4th)

Diwali, also known as the Festival of the Lights, is a Hindu celebration that has been around for more than 2,500 years. The biggest celebration takes place in India where they celebrate for five days making it the biggest event of the year. Read more about the history here

This holiday has also brought to question the relationship between Native Americans and Pilgrims at the time. To some Native Americans, this day serves as the “National Day of Mourning” in remembrance of the tens of thousands of Native Americans who died post-colonization. Read more about the history here
