STEM Activity: Shaving Cream Color

Children can see how colors combine to create new colors with this STEM project taken from our Extend-A-Care YMCA curriculum. Try it at home! It requires materials you probably have in your cupboard.

Before you start, ask your child(ren):

What are colors that you know you can mix together to get new colors?

  • Can of shaving cream
  • Zip-loc baggies
  • Food coloring
  1. In a ziploc baggie, place about ½ cup of shaving cream.
  2. Put a few drops of two food colors in each baggie.
  3. Seal the baggies. (“Burp” the baggies to get the air out.)
  4. Mix the shaving cream and food color by kneading the bag until the colors start blending.
  5. Explain to your child(ren) how adding red to yellow makes orange, and adding yellow to blue makes green. What will red and blue make? (purple)

Ask your child(ren):

What did you notice happening to the colors as you began moving around the shaving cream in the bag?
