Senior News from the YMCA: March 2021

What does healthy aging mean to you? At the Y, we’re committed to healthy aging by providing the programs and classes that meet your needs at any age, at any stage of life.

Whether you are building your strength or maintaining an already rigorous fitness plan, the YMCA of Austin is here to point you in the direction you want to go. And we’ll cheer your successes when you get there!

Personal Training

When many people think of personal training, they envision elite athletes and strict regimens. And while that’s certainly one way it’s used, personal training is actually for everyone!

When you work with a personal trainer, you receive personalized attention to the way your body moves.

A personal trainer considers your unique limitations and abilities, and tailors a plan that builds strength and health. Personal trainers at the Y can also help you to feel more comfortable around equipment that can seem unfamiliar at first glance.

That’s why the YMCA offers free personal training consultations to all members. Schedule your FREE appointment with a personal trainer and see what a difference a tailored approach can make!

Classes for Seniors

Strengthen your relationship with yourself and build friendships with other older adults with our Active Older Adult programs.

Classes like Active Older Adult Fitness, Aqua Cardio, Water in Motion, and Zumba are sure to help you break a sweat and smile while you’re at it!

If you want to see how full your favorite YMCA location is before coming in, you can view our branch capacity limits on our website and plan to visit at a time that feels safest to you.

If you still don’t feel ready to return to the Y, or if you just want to supplement your activity on days when you don’t visit a facility, login to the Virtual YMCA and enjoy our library of on-demand videos or take part in a live, instructor-led class!

Remember to check yourself in virtually! Your insurance partnership with the YMCA allows us to continue providing programs for you, every time you check in.

Join a Recreational Mariachi Band!

Mariachi ParaTodos is a new intergenerational music initiative from Austin Soundwaves, whose mission is to make music learning accessible and equitable for all. The group consists of students ages 15 to 55 and older, performing beautiful, traditional mariachi music.

Mariachi ParaTodos is led by the esteemed professor of practice in mariachi at UT-Austin, Monica Fogelquist, and meets weekly starting April 1st from 7-8:30pm in person while adhering to social distancing guidelines including rehearsing outdoors and mask-wearing.

The practices culminate in a live, outdoor performance with Austin Soundwaves the week of May 17th. Participation is FREE, and no experience is necessary to sing as part of the mariachi choir. Just bring an open heart, an open mind, and a desire to participate in a rich musical endeavor.
