Saving Lives With The Y and We Are Blood!

As we continue to overcome the national blood shortage, the YMCA of Austin remains committed to the advancement of our community, looking for ways to lend a helping arm in any way we can!

This past December, we partnered with We Are Blood to host the YMCA Blood Drive Challenge for the second year. We Are Blood dispatched blood mobiles to 8 YMCA of Austin locations, where each center competed to see who would collect the most lifesaving blood donations. Springs Family YMCA earned bragging rights for the second time after accumulating over 22 units of blood.

“I think they just care about wanting to help their community, and being able to give back by giving blood is an easy way for them to do that,” said Springs Family Y Executive Director Heather Merchant when asked why she thought their members always donate the most units of blood compared to other YMCA of Austin locations.

We Are Blood partners with the Y multiple times throughout the year while hosting the contest twice a year. “Holidays and summer months are when blood collection is most challenging.” Said Tom Meade, We Are Blood’s Director of Donor Engagement. “The Y’s competition has helped us during the 2021 and 2022 holiday seasons”.

The YMCA of Austin values our vital partnership with We Are Blood and is delighted to continue incorporating our members into efforts to serve Central Texas. Meade elaborated on the crucial relationship between the Y, and We Are Blood, saying, “Both organizations have a similar mission in the fact that we’re both here to make sure our communities are healthy.”

Members of the YMCA are always eager to donate blood during our regularly scheduled blood drives throughout the year. There is always a need for blood donations, and taking the time to donate can save multiple lives. One unit, or one whole blood donation, has the potential to save three lives. Outside of our blood drives, members can schedule their next donation by using the We Are Blood Scheduling Form.
