Rainbow Rollerskate Moments

healthy living

Yesterday one of my neighbors, a longtime Y member, roller skated to my house. She whooshed up in classic tan skates with rainbow laces and rainbow socks, almost six-and-a-half feet tall on wheels. I sat at a distance from her on my overgrown lawn, and we talked the lessons this deeply challenging time is teaching us: Seek joy and beauty. Prioritize health. Reach out. Do what matters. Let the rest go.

My friend, whose kids play YMCA sports with mine, can skate pretty freely lately, with most people (she and I included) sheltering in place to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. But one car did pass her on the road. “I saw the driver’s face,” she said, “and I could tell it made them happy — to see this tall, colorful woman skating down the street! The hills made it hard to skate, but it was worth it.”

There are a lot of “hills” making life hard right now. I hope you are taking care of yourself, getting fresh air and exercise — and creating your own “rainbow roller skate” moments of delight where you can. Your YMCA team loves you even more than we already knew we did. We will get through this together, and like roller skating on a beautiful day, it will be worth it.
