On a gorgeous, October Sunday afternoon, a group of our YMCA Adaptive participants and their families met at Camp Moody for a day of fun and adventure. We had an exciting day of canoeing and hiking! With Camp Moody offering Family Exploration Days, we wanted to provide a similar opportunity to our community of individuals with diverse abilities.
Adaptive events and programs are designed to ensure individuals with diverse abilities are provided the same opportunities and experiences as their peers. We work to meet the needs of each participant and provide any additional support and resources that may be needed. For this event, we had an amazing group of staff from Camp Moody and the Southwest Family branch that helped ensure each family had an enjoyable experience.
Each family loaded into a canoe and floated along Onion Creek. Some chose to just relax and enjoy the water and the view, while others decided to get a little more competitive and race one another. Either way, everyone was getting out of the canoe with a smile on their face! Following canoeing, the Camp Moody staff led our families on a hike to wrap up the day. Everyone returned back to the pavilion to cool off, enjoy a few snacks, and reflect on a fun day.
In a time where planning activities can be challenging, families expressed their excitement, and thanks for an opportunity to have a new experience together as a family. One father commented on how he had been wanting to canoe with his family, and we helped provide the safest way to make that a reality.
Our first Adaptive Exploration Day was a wonderful and refreshing day for everyone involved. We are already looking forward to our next event on Sunday, November 8th!
