Deep Water Aqua Cardio is back with Nate B!

After much anticipation, TownLake’s Deep Water Aqua Cardio is back! Please welcome our newest instructor, Nate B! He is replacing Ali B, who recently retired from teaching. The deep water class (Tu/Th NEW TIME 11am-12pm) has a devoted following, and the Y is very happy to welcome Nate as he takes over the class.

This is Nate’s first experience with the YMCA, so let’s all make him feel welcome. He heard about the teaching opportunity here from a Y member who also took his class in another facility, so Nate comes Y-member endorsed — always a great thing! We asked Nate about himself and his class…

Q: How long have you lived in Austin?

“I moved here from Oakland, California, 13 and a half years ago. I’m originally from New York City — I’m a New York City kid. I still think I’m a kid at age 65.”

Q: How would you describe your Deep Water Aqua Cardio class?

Nate: “I call it a challenge day for the participants — a challenge workout. What I’m doing is trying to get them to develop the habits of being fit for life. Part of being fit for life means you must challenge yourself two or three times a week to build muscle. What I’ve learned from older people – people age 80 and up who are fit –- is they work out and they have a plan to work out every single day. They challenge themselves. This won’t be a ‘going through the motions’ class.”

Q: What’s your professional background?

“I’m a military academy grad. I did my undergrad in mechanical engineering at US Merchant Marine Academy, went to MIT for a master’s in nuclear engineering, and then got my Masters in Business Administration at Harvard Business School.”

Q: Wow. How did you get started teaching fitness classes?

“I got started in this industry in 1980. I had my own health club in Southern California. One day the teacher didn’t show up. I had all those people there ready and I said, you know what, I’m going to do the class. And that’s how I got started teaching!”

Q: Do you have a hobby, favorite kind of music, or fun fact about you that you want to share with the Y community?

“My focus and goal is fitness. I just love to learn. I still study at least two hours a day. Right now I’m studying aqua fitness for another certification.”

WELCOME TO THE Y, NATE! Members, we hope you have a wonderful time in Deep Water Aqua Cardio!
