As the Texas heat becomes a memory and fall weather sets in, October is a great time to get outside and enjoy nature with a family hike. Perfect for all ages, hiking can be as gentle or as challenging as your group wants to make it. Just pick a destination, pack some gear and hit the trail!

YMCA staff members love to celebrate as members strive for, meet, and even exceed their goals. Recently we heard from Personal Trainer Tony Vargas, who wanted to give a shout out to his training client Kathleen. Here's what Tony has to say:

"What if every obstacle in your life was part of the process to be successful? 

Fall youth soccer season is off to an exciting -- and adorable -- start at the YMCA! Mom Ashley Moore sent in these photos from the recent practice for 3-5-year olds. Her daughter Georgia, pictured here, is 4 years old and playing soccer for the first time. It is also the Moore family's first time being part of the YMCA community. How's it going so far? "Amazing!" Ashley says.

We had a fun surprise in the TownLake lobby today. New YMCA lifeguard Jake Larson looked up at a painting near the coffee and snacks and realized, "That's my grandpa!"

The oil painting's inscription reads, "Iron Dave Larson - From the Y Guys." Dave has been a Y member for decades, along with his wife, Eve, Jake's grandmother. Eva Larson is, in fact, the artist who painted the portrait.

November is Military Family Month, and as a leading nonprofit dedicated to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the YMCA of Austin offers the following tips to help children of military families in the Greater Austin community cope while loved ones serve overseas.

Most people already know that ample hydration in summer’s heat is important, but continuing to drink enough water when the weather cools off is a different story. Beyond drinking enough water, it is important to remain actionable toward keeping our water supplies clean as the Fall moves in and the summer exits.

Last year, to celebrate our 20th anniversary, the LIVESTRONG Foundation launched a brand new event - the LIVESTRONG Honor 5K and 10K in downtown Austin. More than 1200 runners and walkers joined us for this inaugural event and helped raise over $68,000 to fund programs and services for cancer patients and their families.
