Water Safety

Water Safety is Everyone's Job. Be prepared. Be Safe. Learn to Swim. When the weather turns warm, everyone wants to be in or around the water. Hanging out at the pool or the beach on a hot day is a great way to beat the heat. Between having fun and checking out the lifeguards, most people don't think much about water safety - but they should. According to the Centers for Disease Control, drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths of children ages 14 and younger. A majority of downing accidents occur because of the victim's inability to swim. It doesn't have to be that way, though.

We hate to brag, but the YMCA has been stressing the importance of water safety and swim lessons since 1909. More than 100 years later, swimming remains a core program of the YMCA of Austin. At the Y, we believe swimming is a critical life skill for everyone in the family.

That's why we offer a wide variety of swim instruction for all ages, all skills, and all abilities. That's why we collaborate with Safe Kids Austin and Dell Children's Medical Center to provide lifesaving programs such as Project S.A.F.E., free for first-graders. That's why we partner with the City of Austin and Austin ISD on water confidence programs like SwimATX for high school students. That's why we offer comprehensive Lifeguard Training courses, which include rescue skills, emergency systems, CPR and First Aid. That's why swimming and water-safety will always be a priority for the YMCA. Read op-ed from YMCA of Austin CEO, James Finck
